Republic Day gift: Barack Obama presented historical telegram to Pranab Mukherjee

New Delhi, Jan 28: A facsimile of the first telegram sent by 33rd American President Harry S Truman to the first Indian Head of State Rajendra Prasad framed in a personalised plaque was among the gifts given by US President Barack Obama to President Pranab Mukherjee.

Obama gifts historical telegram to Prez
Truman in his telegram on January 26, 1950 had wished Prasad and people of India on the country becoming a Republic. The gifts sent through diplomatic channels were given to President Mukherjee on the occasion of India's 66th Republic Day on Monday.

The historically significant gift highlights the long-standing friendship the US has shared with India since its early days as a sovereign republic. The facsimile of the original telegram has been framed with a personalised plaque commemorating India's 66th Republic Day.

An exclusive presentation piece made of flawless, highly polished art glass by California artist Stephen Schlanser. that has been specifically commissioned to commemorate 66th Republic Day was another gift given to President Mukherjee.

This original work features an intricate gold-on-gold design with elements adapted from the Indian Constitution and the American Flag. The platter's corners showcase a motif used in the decorative border of the Preamble to the Indian Constitution.

The platter also includes 50 stars representing each US state, the Presidential Seal. American and Indian flags and a personalised inscription.

"The Constitution platter celebrate the friendship our two nations share and honours the momentous occasion of India's 66th Republic Day," the message said.
