Banning Padmaavat release to ensure law and order also part of constitutional duty: MP, R'than in SC

They pressed for an early hearing of the matter as the release of the movie is round the corner. The court agreed for an early hearing and posted the matter for arguments on Tuesday.

The two states said that maintaining law and order is their constitutional duty. Preventing the release to maintain law and order is part of the same duty the states also contended.

Harish Salve, senior counsel appearing for the makers of the film however told the court that is unfortunate how things are shaping up despite the order of the Supreme Court.

Last week, the producers of the film had moved the court seeking to lift the ban imposed on some states on the movie. The states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan had banned the release of the movie.

The Supreme Court while lifting the ban said that it is the constitutional duty of a state to ensure that law and order is maintained and security is provided. The court also rejected another petition which sought a ban on the movie. The court said that once the CBFC has certified the film, a question of a ban does not arise.
