Ban on 'Padmaavat' release: SC to hear producers' plea today

At least six states- Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Haryana have banned the screening of the Padmaavat citing sentiments of Rajput community in their states.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Allahabad High Court issued a contempt notice to Central Board of Film Certification Chairperson Prasoon Joshi in connection with a petition against Padmaavat. The petitioner had filed a Public Interest Litigation in November 2017, seeking a ban on the film for allegedly promoting Sati - the practice of a widow immolating herself in her husband's funeral pyre.

The Rs 190 crore budget Padmaavat movie is produced by Ajit Andhare and Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Owing to the costs mounted on the film by the delay in the release, Box Office India declared the Padmaavat film to be first Bollywood film to exceed Rs 200 crore (US$31 million) in its budget, which makes it most expensive Hindi film of all time.

Viacom 18 Motion Pictures (India) and Paramount Pictures (International) are distributors of the movie.
