Chennai: Yoga guru Baba Ramdev opted out of ongoing cancer research event at IIT-Madras since a co-sponsor pulled out of the event citing the Yoga Guru's remarks where he had said that 'karma' (deeds) is one of the reasons that cause the killer disease. Yoga guru Ramdev was supposed to attend the event as the chief guest and address the cancer specialists on 'cancer and modern medicine'.

Ramdev chose not to attend the International Conference on Translational Cancer Research on February 8-11 for some "prior commitments", according to a New Indian Express report.

"The organising committee informed the local organisers here about Ramdev opting out of the event in a mail. However, we are not sure if it's because of the media reports," Prof Karunagaran said in the report.

It may be recalled that Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had first come up with the thought that those dying of cancer or accidents are facing the consequences of their 'karma' or actions. Subsequently, Ramdev chose to voice his support for Sarma and said that it is true that one has to bear with the consequences of one's deeds.
