Auto driver takes inspiration from Shankar Nag films, provides free service to pregnant women.
Bengaluru, Nov 12: Here is something the garden city can learn from a man living in Yadgiri district in Karnataka.

Mallikharjun Itekar , an autodriver from this small town, has been providing free service to all pregnant women for the last eight years !

A Newsminute report said that Itekar, a die-hard fan of actor Shankar Nag, was inspired by the ace actor's roles as a rickshaw driver. Itekar, popularly known as ‘Sangliana', a movie of the late actor, has an auto, which he has decked up with the Shankar Nag posters and dialogues.

The driver, who has studied only till 7th standard, has helped over 2,000 pregnant women in the last eight years, says the report. Once, two women even delivered babies in his auto on the way to the hospital, says the report.

Itekar had to take a bank loan to buy his beloved autorickshaw. He charges absolutely nothing from pregnant women and he also refuses to take financial support from government or charitable organisations.

Newsminute report says that Itekar grew up watching Nag's films and the actor's roles as socially committed characters encouraged him to be engaged in some social .

There is another curious fact - Itekar and Nag were even born on same date - November 9.

Itekar further decided to launch this service for pregnant women after he witnessed his sister, who was suffering from medical complications, struggling to reach hospital as there was no vehicle available. Itekar had to run two kilometres to seek help, the report said.
