‘Attempts are underway to resolve rift in judiciary’, says SC judge Chelameswar
Justice J Chelameswar, who is also the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, stated that efforts are being made to resolve the ongoing rift in judiciary, reported The Economic Times.
New Delhi, Jan 18: One of the four "rebel" judges who openly "revolted" against the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra, Justice J Chelameswar, who is also the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, stated that efforts are being made to resolve the ongoing rift in judiciary, reported The Economic Times.
Last week, four senior SC judges--justices Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan Lokur and Kurian Joseph--addressed the media in the national capital, which took everyone by surprise.
The four judges mostly questioned the conduct of the CJI, especially over the allocation of cases.
"Attempts are underway to resolve the issues," Chelameswar told The Economic Times on Wednesday. "There are larger problems. We want them to be addressed. That is why we went to the press breaking all conventions."
Justice Chelameswar expressed his concern that the problem cannot be allowed to linger on for far too long. "It has to be resolved soon," he said. "We are not concerned with individual cases."
Reports state that the four "rebel" judges are likely to meet the CJI on Thursday for the second time since last week's press meet on January 12.
In fact, the meeting was scheduled on Wednesday. However, it was cancelled as Justice Chelameswar did not attend the court because of his indisposition. He is likely to attend the court on Thursday.
