Guwahati: Around 42 Muslim clerics in Assam issued fatwa against young singer Nahid Afreen who was the first runner-up in a reality show in 2015, asking her to stop performing in public.

According to police, the fatwa was issued in the form of a leaflet which read, 'Nahid is scheduled to perform against the Sharia which will be organised on March 25 at Udali Sonai Bibi College in Lanka town Assam'. It also said that if any anti-sharia acts like musical nights are held on grounds surrounded by masjids, idgahs, madrassas and graveyards, our future generations will attract the wrath of Allah. The fatwa was issued against Nahid since her venue of the program was in vicinity of a mosque and a graveyard.

Speaking to ANI, Nahid said,''My singing is the gift of God I believe it must be properly utilised, not doing so is ignoring God. Was shocked & broken from inside at first, but many Muslim singers gave me inspiration to not quit music, will never do so.''

Meanwhile, police who is investigating the case said that Nahid and her family would be provided security.

Also, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has strongly condemned this act of putting restrictions against performances by this young singer, who brought fame to Assam with her talent.

Nahid Afreen, 16, is a Class X student and hails from Biswanath Chariali city in Assam.
