Assam assembly polls: Rakhi Sawant to campaign for Republic Party of India (Athawale)

Mumbai, March 15: Bollywood's drama queen Rakhi Sawant is all set to campaign for Republic Party of India (Athawale) in poll-bound Assam.

According to news reports, the RPI- a party, that fights for the rights of dalits, is hoping to win five seats in the upcoming Assam assembly elections on May 16.

Nathuni Das, RPI (A) state general secretary was quoted saying as to the TOI, "Rakhi Sawant heads the women's wing of the party. Her presence in the campaign will definitely have an impact on the younger generation. Our motive behind contesting the Assam election is to promote the constitutional rights of people here." 36-year-old Rakhi joined Ramdas Athawale-led RPI in June 2014 and she was appointed chief of RPI(A)'s state women's wing. [Rakhi Sawant joins RPI]

Bollywood's veteran actor Nana Patekar and singer and actress Salma Agha may also be the star campaigners for RPI in Assam.

On Monday, March 14, RPI announced first list of candidates, who will contest in Assam.

"The party is hoping to be an alternative for dalits, minorities and other ethnic communities in Assam", Das said.
