Arunachal Pradesh rape-murder of minor girl: Mob storms police station, beats 2 accused to death
In Arunachal Pradesh’s Tezu on Monday, a mob stormed inside a police station, dragged out two men accused of raping and murdering a minor girl and beat them to death.
Itanagar, Feb 20: In a shocking incident in Arunachal Pradesh's Tezu on Monday, a mob of around 1,000 people stormed inside a police station, dragged out two men accused of raping and murdering a minor girl and beat them to death.
On February 12, a 5-year-old girl from Namgo village in Wakro revenue circle in Lohit district went missing. The victim's body and severed head were found at a tea garden in the village, stated reports. On February 18, Sanjay Sobor (30) and Jagdish Lohar (25) were arrested by the police for raping and killing the girl.
On Monday morning, residents of the victim's village went to the police station in Tezu (headquarters of Lohit district) demanding to hand over both the accused to them.
When police personnel refused to honour their demand, they forcefully entered the police station, dragged out the two accused and beat them to death. No arrests have been made so far in regard to the killing of two men.
"A mob of nearly 1,000 people attacked the police lockup and took away the two accused. Some policemen have also sustained injuries in the attack," Deputy Inspector General Aaid Apur Bitin told Hindustan Times.
Chief minister Pema Khandu condemned the rape as "barbaric" and the lynching as "unfortunate". "Our rules and regulations do not allow us to take the law into our hands," Khandu said.
"I have placed three officers on suspension and ordered for magisterial inquiry. The Superintendent of Police has been transferred," Khandu told India Today.
The incident brought back the memories of brutal mob lynching of a rape accused man in Dimapur, Nagaland in 2015.
