Aruna Shanbaug's 68th birthday today: Know all about her attacker Sohanlal Valmiki

Hapur, June 1: King Edward Memorial (KEM) nurse Aruna Shanbaug, who was in a vegetative state following a brutal sexual assault, 42 years ago by a ward boy, passed away on May 18, 2015.

After her death, news reports related to her tormentor Sohanlal Bhartha Valmiki made headlines. Valmiki is peacefully living in Parpa, a village in Hapur, at his in-laws place, in Uttar Pradesh, 75 kms from Delhi, along with his wife Bimla, two sons- 26-year-old Krishna and 22-year-old Ravinder, two daughters and two grandchildren. Valmiki's whereabouts unknown since Saturday

According to news reports, Valmiki went missing, when a group of people came posing as TV crew for his interview.

They allegedly took him to Noida, Sec-16, Film City Centre, along with his son, but both have not yet returned to their home, media reports said. [Mumbai remembers Aruna Shanbaug on her 68th birthday]

Village Panchayat to decide Valmiki's future

According to reports, Panchayat in Parpa village will decide whether Valmiki will be allowed to stay in village or not, this week, after his bitter past got exposed.

Sohanlal remained in jail for 7 years

After committing the brutal crime, the perpetrator Valmiki was sentenced to seven-year jail term, after being convicted for assault and robbery. However, he was not charged for rape, sexual molestation or unnatural sexual offence. He was released in 1980.

Sohanlal's livelihood

Living a life of penance, Sohanlal, who is in 70s, works as a daily wage labourer in Dadri, Ghaziabad, where he earns Rs 261 a day and he rides bicycle till 30 kms. [MP to institute Aruna Shanbaug award]

Valmiki, who has a weak vision, leaves home at 6 am and returns by 8 pm and earns Rs 4,000 a month.

He has reportedly given up non-vegetarian food, bad habits like smoking bidis and drinking.

Sohanlal, now, lives a regretful life

Regretting over his past mistake, he said that he did not touch his wife for years, when he was released from jail. After 14 years, his son was born. One of his daughters died when he was in jail. [Aruna Shanbaug's 42-year ordeal comes to an end: All you need to know]

Hailing from Dadupur village in Bulandshahr, Sohanlal was quoted saying as, "I wish I had died. My sons would have taken care of her my wife. I am tired of the memories, I want to die now."

Sohanlal says "he committed crime in a fit of rage"

According to reports, Sohanlal told reporters that he was scared of dogs but 25-year-old Aruna used to tell him to feed dogs and to seep their cages. When he asked her to grant him few days leave, then, also she refused that made him feel bad.

Then, on Nov 27, 1973, a fit of rage, he assaulted her, but claims that he did not rape her and he did not strangulated her with dog chain.

However, he says that he slapped her hard, after which she fell down and fainted.
