Anti-Sterlite protest: Rajnath Singh seeks report from Tamil Nadu govt

Union Mome Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday sought a report from Tamil Nadu government in connection with the violence in Tuticorin which claimed 11 lives so far.

Rajnath Singh condoled the death of people killed in the police firing during the anti-Sterlite protest.

Singh tweeted, "My thoughts are with bereaved families. I also pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. I appeal to the people in Tuticorin to remain calm and maintain peace and tranquillity in the region."

He said, "I am deeply pained at the loss of precious lives during the agitation at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu. The MHA has taken cognizance of the situation and sought a report on the incident and the prevailing situation from the state government."

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister EK Palaniswami said, "The entire episode which happened was primarily because of certain political parties, NGOs & anti-social elements, who took protestors to a wrong path."

The chief minister police firing on protesters. He said, "If someone is attacked, the natural course would be to defend and safeguard themselves. This is what has been done by the police in response."
