NEET-like single entrance exam for engineering courses in the offing?
New Delhi, June 8: All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) which is a governing body of the engineering colleges across the country, is now contemplating to conduct a NEET like single entrance examination for admission to various undergraduate engineering courses.
Reportedly, AICTE is toying with the idea of making Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main the single entrance test for seeking admission in engineering colleges across the country.
Presently students who clear JEE Main get admission in selected coleges, including IITs, National Institutes of Technology, Indian Institute of Information Technology and some Centre funded colleges. States have their own rules and regulation for undergraduate engineering courses.
When asked about the move, AICTE chairman Anil D Sahasrabudhe was quoted by TOI as saying, "We are planning to make JEE-Main the single entrance test in the country. JEE-Main is based on the CBSE syllabus and different states are following different syllabi; so having a single entrance test for engineering is still in the planning stage".
Apparently, the step is being planned out as students have to appear for multiple tests to get admission in BE colleges.
National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is common entrance test for getting admission in any medical colleges in India. Issue recently hit the headlines after State governments put its foot down on the move.
Finally, the Supreme Court directed the Centre to hold medical exams under NEET covering government and private colleges besides state boards.
