AIADMK crisis: Dinakaran moves HC, opposition parties meet President

The Edappadi Palanisamy government is now in the minority in the state assembly

The AIADMK crisis in Tamil Nadu has reached President Ram Nath Kovind's doorstep. Leaders of opposition parties led by DMK made a representation to the Rashtrapati Bhavan over the political crisis in the state. Meanwhile, back in Chennai, TTV Dinakaran has moved the Madras High Court against the scheduled AIADMK General Council meeting.

A Raja, Sitaram Yechury, Anand Sharma, Kanimozhi along with a host of leaders from opposition parties met the President to apprise him of the situation in Tamil Nadu and urged him to direct Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy to prove majority. "We have asked the President's directions to convene the Tamil Nadu assembly on an urgent basis and seek the government to prove majority. Let the assembly decide who has a majority," said CPM's Sitaram Yechury.

Even as the AIADMK led by Edappadi Palanisamy and O Pannerselvam is making arrangements to host a General Council meeting on September, Dinakaran has moved court to stop it. Dinakaran camp now has the support of 23 AIADMK MLAs. Dinakaran has contended that only the General Secretary has the powers to call for a general council meeting and that the September 12 event should be stopped. The petition states that the party bylaws only allow the General secretary, who at present is Sasikala Natarajan, to call for a General Council meeting.

The meeting is expected to adopt a resolution to oust Sasikala from the post of interim General Secretary as well as the party. In a meeting held at the AIADMK Headquarters last week, the party decided that all appointments made by her including Dinakaran's are 'null and void'.
