The 16 prisoners lodged in the Srinagar central jail are now being shifted to other prisons in Jammu and Kashmir. This decision comes following the dramatic escape made by Lashkar-e-Tayiba terrorist, Naved alias Abu Hanzala from a Srinagar hospital earlier this week.

The police said that the foreign terrorists would be shifted out of the Srinagar jail. They are likely to be moved to jails in Udhampur, Jammu and Kathua.

On Thursday the government initiated a host of measures to ensure better security in jails. While several officials were transferred and placed under suspension, security at the Srinagar jail too was stepped up.

The police have advised the jail authorities not to allow routine medical check-ups for inmates at medical facilities outside the jail unless there was a court order.

Further it was also decided that those prisoners scheduled to appear before the courts must be escorted by heavy contingents of the J&K police and CRPF. Further the Union Home Ministry has also directed the state government to enhance security in jails. It has also suggested the deployment of CRPF personnel in some jails. Further the Home Ministry also suggested that the authorities keep a close watch on the visitors to jail.
