Lucknow, April 12: On Wednesday, reports emerged that a couple in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, was allegedly attacked by activists of the Hindu Yuva Vahini on suspicion of 'love jihad'.

"#WATCH Hindu Yuva Vahini barges into Meerut home, drags couple to police, alleges Muslim boy romancing Hindu girl," tweeted Times Now.

Love Jihad

"Hindu Yuva Vahini workers barge into a house in Meerut, rough up a couple on suspicion of 'love jihad'," tweeted ANI.

The Hindu Yuva Vahini is a Hindu youth group, founded by chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath. Love jihad, also called Romeo jihad, is a term coined to highlight alleged role of Muslims boys and men to convert women and girls belonging to various communities to the Islam under the garb of love.

After the Bharatiya Janata Party formed its government in Uttar Pradesh recently, the police formed anti-Romeo squads across the state to provide safety to women from eve-teasers and molesters.

The formation of anti-Romeo squad was a poll promise of the BJP. While several people have welcomed the move to tackle the menace of roadside goons, who regularly harass women and girls, several others have criticised the decision of the government as cases of alleged harassment of men and consenting couples have come to light.
