Delhi Smog : Gopal Rai hits out at Center

Delhi Rural Development Minister Gopal Rai on November 13 took on the Central Govt and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on the increasing levels of air pollution in the National Capital.

Delhi minister Gopal Rai addressing the media

He said, "The concern for the better health of the people of Delhi is not only the responsibility of the Delhi Government, it is also the responsibility of the Central Government, however, the Central Government does not seem to be bothered by the crisis situation. The AAP Government is doing all it can and will continue to do so for the people of Delhi, but Central Government cooperation is also needed."

"The burning of stubble by farmers is an issue which every year creates a situation like this - deterioration of air quality in the capital, but what has the Haryana Government done about it?" he asked.

On the implementation of the odd-even rule to bring the situation under control, the minister said that a review petition has been submitted to the Supreme Court post the NGT's decision to withdraw exemptions for two-wheelers and women - to which the government said that it is not ready to 'compromise' the safety of women. Gopal Rai said that a final call on the issue will be taken after the Supreme Court hearing on November 13.

He said, "The pollution in the National Capital has always been an important point of discussion in the Delhi Government Cabinet and as well as for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal,"

Gopal Rai while briefing the media also said that the pollution levels are being monitored by the Delhi Government on a regular basis and a decision will be taken very soon based on reports from scientists.
