Aadhaar-PAN linking: No deadline fixed as yet, says Arun Jaitley
There are over 25 crore PAN card and around 111 crore Aadhaar card holders in country.
New Delhi, Aug 11: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Friday informed the Lok Sabha that the government has not fixed any time frame to complete the linking of Aadhaar with PAN.
"No Madam," Jaitley said while replying to a query whether the government has fixed any time frame to complete the linking of the 12-digit biometric Aadhaar with permanent account number (PAN).
As on June 28, there were over 25 crore PAN card holders in the country while Aadhaar has been issued to 111 crore people.
Earlier, the government had extended the deadline to link Aadhaar and PAN till August 31, 2017.
The official twitter handle of the department on July 31 had said the move was made 'in view of difficulties faced by taxpayers.' However, the returns will not be processed until the linkage of Aadhaar with PAN is done. Actual linking of PAN with Aadhaar can be done subsequently, but any time before 31st August, 2017, the twitter handle added.
With this new statement from the Finance Minister, it looks like there is no time frame fixed for Aadhaar-PAN linking as of now
