A plot to kill Narendra Modi busted, police take into custody Coimbatore blast convict

The police have busted a plot that was aimed at killing Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. The Coimbatore police arrested a person who was earlier convicted in the 1998 serial blasts case on the charge that he was hatching a plot to kill the PM.

The person to be arrested is Mohammad Rafique who had served his term in connection with the 1998 blasts case. The police were listening in to a conversation between Rafique and a transport contractor.

In the conversation, both are speaking about finances relating to vehicles. However, Rafique suddenly says, " but we have decided to kill Modi. We were the ones who had planted bombs when L K Advani had visited Coimbatore in 1998."

Rafique is further heard telling the contractor that he has many cases against him The city police formed special teams to investigate the recorded conversation and verify the genuineness of the persons in it, the police said in a press release. He has been arrested based on the conversation and sent to 15 days judicial custody.

Coimbatore was rocked by a series of bomb blasts in February 1998 in which 58 people were killed and property worth crores were destroyed. Explosives packed with gelatin sticks and timer devices were planted at 11 places, all within a radius of 12 kilometres. Investigator said that the blasts were part of larger conspiracy to target L K Advani, who was in the city to address an election meeting.
