A delegation to meet Rajnath Singh over attack on Dalit Sikhs in Shillong

New Delhi: The ongoing violence in Shillong has forced over 1000 of people to take shelter at several safe places and some of them have been forced to take refuge in Army barracks. Over 500 Dalit Sikhs residents of Punjabi Colony, Bada Bazaar, Shillong have been forced to go to army barracks as their colony was besieged by Khasi Community who were demanding that Punjabi settlers must be moved to the outskirts of the city.

A delegation of Human Rights Defense International (HRDI) will meet Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Governor of Meghalaya , Chief Minister of Mehgalaya and Jyotika Kalra, Member, National Human Rights Commission to seek their indulgence in this incident. A delegation of HRDI will also visit Shillong, Meghalaya and prepare a report and submit the same to the Central Government for appropriate action.

Violence started in Shillong on May 31, 2018 as a fake news traveled across the city that a group of Punjabi people from the colony has decapitated two Khasi boys. A mob gathered near the colony, intent on violence. The mob clashed with personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force and state police, resulting in injuries on both sides. Superintendent of Police (City) Stephan Rynjah was injured after he was hit by a rod. The police had to fire tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

The curfew was imposed and the army also conducted a flag march in the area. Despite imposition of curfew, the Sikhs were attacked by violent mob during the relaxation of the curfew. Reportedly stone palters were funded with cash and alcohol.

Speaking on behalf of HRDI former BJP Rajya Sabha Member Tarun Vijay demanded that the state government and the Central government should provide adequate security to Sikhs as well as other religious and linguistic minorities there who are continuously living under the threat of violence. HRDI further demanded that action should be taken against the perpetrators of violence and it should be ensured that such incidents are not repeated in future.

Justice M C Garg President, Society for Youth of North East, Rajesh Gogna, Secretary-General, HRDI, Dr. Charuwali Khanna and others Human/Minorities Rights Activists also expressed their concern on the ongoing violence.
