Cataract surgery goes wrong in MP: 32 persons complain of low-vision, CM assures action

Barwani (MP), Dec 4: Around 32 persons complained of low-vision and irritation in the eyes after undergoing cataract operation at a camp organised by the district hospital in Sendhwa town here due to alleged negligence by surgeons.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today declared that the state government would reimburse all expenses to be incurred by the patients for treatment.

Botched up cataract surgery in MP

The 32 persons underwent cataract surgery in the camp organised by Andhatva Nivaran (Blindness Eradication) Committee of Barwani district hospital between November 16 and 21.

Following complaints in this regard, a five-member committee was constituted under Director, Health Services, Dr BN Chouhan, which recommended suspension of eye surgeon, Dr RS Palod allegedly for negligence under whose guidance the camp was organised, joint director, Health Services, Dr Sharad Pandit said today.

Suspension of the eye surgeon will be recommended to the state government after receiving the report from the probe committee, he said.

The matter came to light after the persons complained of inflation, itching and low vision post surgery, and were referred to government MY hospital and private Aurobindo hospital in Indore, Dr Pandit said.

The patients complained that they were "unable to see anything" post their cataract operation, he said. Five patients are presently undergoing treatment in MY Hospital, while rest were admitted to the private hospital, Dr Pandit said.
