3,316 pigs die of PRRS in Mizoram since April

Aizawl, June 8: The number of swine deaths at Biate village in Champai district along the Mizoram-Myanmar border has gone up to 3,316 in Mizoram due to Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) since early April, state animal husbandry and veterinary department officials said on Wedneday, June 8.

The PRRS disease, infected through pigs and piglets imported from neighbouring Myanmar, was found to be prevalent in four districts - Champhai, Serchhip, Lunglei and Lawngtlai.

Champhai district was the worst hit where one family lost 64 pigs to the disease, which hnd hit Champhai town and its surroundings and also Bungzung, Khawzawl and Biate villages.

The AH and Veterinary department, in a statement, said the prevalence of PRRS in the four out of eight districts was confirmed by samples of dead and sick swine examined in the laboratories.

The department has instructed all veterinarians posted at different parts of the state to remain in their respective places of posting and maintain strict vigil.
