Bengaluru, Feb 10: Swadharme Nidhanan Shreyaha or glory to die while performing one's duty. This is just what the nine soldiers at the Siachen glacier did before they laid down their lives.

For the nine soldiers fate had something cruel in store, but there was one miracle when the rescue team found Lance Naik Hanumanthappa alive.

Siachen

Carrying out a rescue mission at the Siachen Glacier is no easy job. It required an extremely courageous mission and a lot of manpower.

An extremely dangerous mission had to be carried out at a height of 20,500 feet to find the soldiers from the Madras Regiment who were buried in snow after a wall of ice collapsed on their post.

Rescue at 20,500 feet:

The rescue mission involved 200 soldiers. They were assisted by two rescue dogs, Misha and Dot whose praise the army is singing today and rightly so. Further the rescue mission comprised choppers, radars, saws and also rock drills. First and foremost locating the post was no easy job.

Once the post was located the rescue team had to cut through each inch of ice before they could find the bodies. During this mission they learnt that there was ice debris covering an area of 1,000 by 800 metres.

The operation was not easy by any standard and there were constant interruptions due to poor weather and blizzards.

A spokesperson of the army informed that it was the determination of the rescue team which went into this mission. He also added that Hanumanthappa had shown courage to survive.

He was found alive and had survived temperatures that ranged between minus 30 and minus 55 degrees, the army spokesperson also said.
