A senior official told PTI that the blast triggered by an improvised explosive device (IED) occurred around 2pm, when the BSF men were deployed just outside the gate of their Koirengi sector headquarters camp, on the Dimapur-Imphal highway in Imphal. The two jawans, both of constable rank, received splinter injuries in the blast and later succumbed.

In a similar attack, two Assam Rifles jawans were killed during patrolling near Manipur's Chandel district in November 2017. An Assam Rifles jawan was killed in June 2017 and four others were injured. A banned terror outfit called Revolutionary People's Front (RPF) had claimed the responsibility of the attack. Then outfit claimed to have carried out improvised explosive device (IED) blast at Kashung village in Ukhrul district.
