11 Government officials arrested in Assam in job-for-cash scam
In a major crackdown by the Sarbananda Sonowal led Assam Government against corruption in the State, Assam police have arrested 11 officers in connection with the alleged jobs-for-cash scam on Wednesday.
The arrested include 7 Assam Civil Service officers and 4 Assam Police Services officers from the 2013 batch.
Reports claim that the arrested are Hemanta Hillol Saikia, Jayanta Kumar Das, Sabira Imran, Pallabika Sarma Choudhury, Harsha Jyoti Bora, Sudipta Goswami Bharadwaj, Debajit Bora, Amarjit Das, Dipankar Khanikar, Aniruddha Bora and Hinmangshu Choudhury.
More arrests are expected in the next few weeks. Forensic examination including handwriting tests had confirmed the alleged involvement of 25 officers.
Incidentally, the scam in the Assam Public Service Commission had taken place during the erstwhile Congress Government led by Tarun Gogoi. The scam had come to light with the arrest of former APSC Chairman (2013) Rakesh Kumar Paul in November 2016.
The present BJP led Assam Government announcing zero-tolerance against corruption has launched aggressive investigations.
In October 2016 a Government engineer had been arrested on charges of collecting cash on behalf of Paul thereby opening up a can of worms leading to numerous arrests and dismissal of officers from service in connection with the jobs-for-cash scam.
