New Delhi, Oct 31: Once again the elevation of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi as the party president has been delayed. He was supposed to take over the reins of the grand old party by October end, which obviously did not happen.

Now, reports suggest Rahul will take over the party's presidentship from his mother Sonia Gandhi in November. The delay in the change in leadership in the party is caused due to the upcoming Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections, scheduled on November 9, and illness of Sonia, stated a Congress leader to reporters.

"People who matter will remain till Himachal polls on November 9. Soniaji's sudden illness further delayed the process," a senior All India Congress Committee(AICC) functionary told The New Indian Express. "The election for the post of party president should be over by end of November," he said.

Unless and until Sonia does not recover, party leaders can't decide on the date of the meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), which will approve the schedule for the election of party chief.

On Monday, when reporters queried about his elevation as the Congress president, Rahul after attending a strategy meeting with senior leaders, said, "I will become, I will become."

In fact, the election of delegates, who vote for the post of the party's president, got over in most of the states. They have passed resolutions favouring Rahul's elevation as the head of the party.

However, there are apprehensions within a section of the party that the delay might be due to the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections, scheduled on December 9 and December 18. Many fear that the outcome of the election results in these two states might decide whether finally Rahul will become the party head.

During his United States (US) tour in September, Rahul while responding to a question if he wanted to take up an executive role in the Congress, he said, "I am absolutely ready to do that."
