Did Gujarat traders bat for Congress to win Assembly polls?

By Oneindia

New Delhi, Oct 25: It actually does not matter that the Election Commission has been taking its own sweet time to declare the Assembly election dates for Gujarat. The state is already in poll fever as prominent leaders from the national capital, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, are visiting the state in droves. Now, reports say the EC is all set to declare Gujarat poll dates on Wednesday afternoon.

This time the Gujarat polls, slated in December, are going to be a battle royale. Whereas PM Modi will be fighting for his personal (as Gujarat is his home state) and the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) prestige during the state polls, Rahul seems to be testing the waters of Gujarat to prove his pan-India appeal just days ahead of becoming the president of the Congress.

In this context, the Gujarat elections look interesting. However, it is the local issues that top the charts of voters in Gujarat. Be it the impact of demonetisation and Goods and Services Tax (GST), lack of jobs or agitations of the Patidars and Dalits, the Assembly elections in the state are going to be issued based.

One prominent community, the traders, which is known to be pro-BJP is a miffed lot with the economic policies of the Modi government. The traders of Gujarat had openly protested against the GST and demonetisation in recent times. Under such a scenario, the Congress is hoping to win the favour of the traders' community.

A video tweeted by @CNNnews18 showcases a group of traders from Gujarat interacting with Rahul inside a flight. One of the men in the group said his wishes were always there for the Congress VP. He also said that they want Rahul to be the next PM. To this Rahul said that he and his party needed their support.

"Gujarat Traders bats for Rahul Gandhi says he will win Gujarat election. Take a look," tweeted @CNNnews18.

Now, we can't say if wishes of a few traders from the state would help the Congress win the Assembly polls in Gujarat, but the current wave in Modi's home turf is to take revenge against the BJP for "backstabbing the traders and businessmen" because of the GST and the demonetisation.
