Haryana is among the states slated for legislative assembly elections alongside the general elections and assembly polls in certain Indian states. The state is gearing up to elect all 90 members of the assembly as the incumbent coalition government, composed of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), is nearing the end of its tenure on November 3.
In the previous election, the BJP, under the leadership of Manohar Lal Khattar, emerged as the largest party but fell short of a majority with 40 seats. Consequently, they formed a government through a post-poll alliance with the JJP, which secured 10 seats, along with support from seven Independent MLAs.
This led to a coalition government, with Manohar Lal Khattar of the BJP continuing as the Chief Minister for a second term. At the same time, Dushyant Chautala from the JJP assumed the role of Deputy Chief Minister.
Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress (INC) won 31 seats, while the Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP) secured 1 seat in the previous elections.
The Haryana Legislative Assembly, based in Chandigarh, is a unicameral body with 90 seats obtained through direct elections, following the first-past-the-post electoral method. Members serve a five-year term.
