Haryana is a state in north-central India, formed on 1 November 1966, after the partition of Punjab. It shares borders with Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Rajasthan. Its capital is Chandigarh, and the name "Haryana" means "The Abode of God."
Covering an area of 17,070 square miles (44,212 square km), Haryana had a population of 25,353,081 as of 2011.
The Haryana Legislative Assembly, based in Chandigarh, is a unicameral body with 90 seats obtained through direct elections, following the first-past-the-post electoral method. Members serve a five-year term.
The most recent assembly election was held in 2019, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the largest party, winning 40 seats with 36.7% of the total votes. The Indian National Congress (INC) secured 31 seats, and the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) won 10 seats with 14.9% of the votes. The Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP) managed to secure 1 seat with 0.7% of the votes.
Seven seats were won by independent candidates, while one seat went to another party. This election outcome reflects the diverse political landscape of Haryana.
