The World Photography Day is annually observed on Aug 19 across the world. Be it a professional or amateur photographers, all of them celebrate the day with equal zest.

One of the most important thing is to know about the origin of photography.

The Daguerreotype photographic processes was invented by Frenchmen Joseph Nicephore Niepce and Louis Daguerre in 1837. William Fox is said to be the inventor of Calotype photo process.

Daguerreotype photographic processes is the first practical photographic process recognised by the world.

Photography origin in India

In the 19th century, Photography emerged in India and various British photographers travelled to India to record the historical moment of the day, including landscape of India. William Armstrong Fallon was the one who surveyed the Ajanta and Ellora caves for writing photography book.

Origin of camera

Camera originated from camera obscura, and the history of camera can be traced back to ancient Greece who used pinholes or lens to project the image of the scene upside down.

First lady photographer of India

Homai Vyarawalla is the first lady press photographer from Navasari, Gujarat. She was born in a middle class family in 1913. Her work captured the last day of the British Empire in India and the emergence of a new country.

Homai grew up in Bombay and she was the only girl in her class who completed her matriculation examination. She learnt photography from Maneckshaw Vyarawalla, whom she later on married.

The one behind the famous photograph of Jawaharlal Nehru and the wife of the then British Deputy High Commission lighting up a cigarette together, Vyarawalla shot to fame from there.

She dedicated 33 years of her life to photography. At the age of 57, she went back to her native place Vadodara. She passed away at the age of 98, on January 15, 2012.

World Photography Day is annually observed to recognise the passion of photography enthusiasts.
