Will BJP, others succeed in ending dynastic politics in Haryana?

Haryana is one of the states in the country where dynastic politics has played a crucial role in deciding its future ever since it came into existence. But, the coming October 15 assembly polls are going to be a tough test for the various political dynasties that have ruled the state for more than parties coming from non-dynastic backgrounds.

The BJP, which recently declared its second list of remaining 47 candidates for the 90-member Haryana assembly polls, has vowed to put an end to the dynastic politics prevalent in the state. The party is banking heavily on the Modiwave, which helped the party won 7 Parliamentary seats in Haryana during Lok Sabha polls. It is now hoping to end the dominant dynastic parties in the state whom it has accused of stalling Haryana's growth.

Not only BJP, other political parties in the state are also pitching to end the dynastic politics in the state.

If we look in to Haryana's history, then till 2005, power in the state wrested in the hands of families of former political big shots in the state. These political families either became the kings in the state or became the king makers.

Dynastic politics has ruled the roost in Haryana ever since its creation in 1966

But, statistics were changed after Congress's Bhupinder Singh Hooda, belonging to a non-dynastic party, came to power in 2005. But, Hooda, who wishes to get third time lucky, now is being accused of promoting dynastic politics.

Haryana politics was dominated by the three Lals namely Devi Lal, Bansi Lal and Bhajan Lal for nearly four decades.

Ever since its creation in 1966, the state has seen more CMs from dynastic families than those coming from unknown background.

The Bansi Lal dynasty ruled the state for almost 13 years, though not for a continuous period, followed by Bhajan Lal clan which was in power for nearly 11 years. On the third place are the Chautalas (including Devi Lal) who were in power for ten and a half years.

Hooda is the only CM, who doesn't come from a popular political family, to have ruled the state for nearly 10 years.

The families of all such dominant clans in Haryana are in the poll fray this time as well. Devi Lal's son Om Prakash Chautala still continues to be the INLD's chief ministerial candidate, while Bhajan Lal's son Kuldeep Bishnoi is also a CM candidate of the HJC-HJP alliance. Kiran Chaudhary, Shruti Chaudhary and Ranbir Singh Mahendra from Bansi Lal's family will also contest elections. Off late, Hooda's family too has joined the group of these families after his son Deepender Hooda, now an MP, joined active politics.

But, all these candidates will face tough challenge from rival parties BJP, Congress, BSP and others who have decided to eliminate dynastic politics from Harayana as it results in state's decline.

Now have a look at the various dynasties active in Haryana politics:

Hooda clan

Incumbent Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda is a popular Jat leader from Rohtak. Hooda, who is a four time MP, is the son of renowned freedom fighter, Ranbir Singh Hooda.

Hooda, 67, is a two-time CM of Haryana and had defeated late Devi Lal from Rohtak.

Deepeder Singh Hooda, son of the incumbent Haryana CM, is currently an MP from Rohtak. He also saved Congress's image by winning despite the anti-incumbency wave when all others lost.

Hooda's son Deepender Singh Hooda is currently an MP from Rohtak. He is the only Congress MP from the state who managed to win the 2014 general election despite the anti-incumbency wave. Deepender is a three-time MP and became the youngest MP in the state 2005.

Chautala clan

Chaudhary Devi Lal (1914-2001) was a two-time Haryana CM and also served as the sixth deputy PM of India between 1989 and 1991. Devi Lal's real name was Devi Dayal. He belonged to a village named Chautala in Haryana.

Devi Lal's son Om Prakash Chautala has been the CM of Haryana five times. His grandsons Ajay and Abhay Chautala are also active in politics. Om Prakash Chautala and his son Ajay Singh were convicted in the teacher recruitment scam in the state during 1999-2000. The duo was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment by a Delhi court on January 2013.

His great grandson Dushyant Chautala was recently elected an MP from Hisar. He defeated HJC chief Kuldeep Bishnoi, who was the incumbent MP from there, in this year's general election. His other grandsons, Karan and Arjun Chautala,are also active in politics.

OP Chautala and his son Ajay Singh were convicted in the teacher recruitment scam in the state during 1999-2000. In January 2013,a New Delhi court sentenced the duo to 10 years'imprisonment.

Bhajan Lal clan

Bhajan Lal (1930-2011) started his political career as a village sarpanch and became Haryana CM twice. He formed the Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) in 2007 and his sons Chander Mohan Bishnoi and Kuldeep Bishnoi are taking his legacy ahead.

Chander Mohan is a former deputy CM of Haryana. He was later dismissed from the state Cabinet for his prolonged absence from the office.

His younger son Kuldeep Bishnoi, 46, is the HJC president and a former Lok Sabha MP. Kuldeep Bishnoi in the CM candidate of the HJC-Haryana Jan Chetna Party (HJCP) alliance.

Bansi Lal clan

Bansi Lal (1927-06) was a senior Congress strongman in Haryana and served as CM for three times. Lal, also a freedom fighter, is regarded as the architect of Haryana. In 1996 he parted his ways from Congress and floated his own party, Haryana Vikas Party.

Bansi Lal's elder son Ranbir Singh Mahendra is a former MLA while his daughter-in-law Kiran Chaudhary is a sitting MLA from Tosham constituency.

His granddaughter Shruti Chaudhary is a former MP but lost the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
