The alleged lady ISIS recruiter: Several dots yet to be joined

New Delhi, Sept 16: The case of Afshan Jabeen, the women alleged to be a recruiter for the ISIS is generating curiosity as the investigations progress.

An officer part of the investigation informed OneIndia that they are still probing if her husband was in the know of her alleged activity. The officer however, added that they are trying to ascertain whether she was attempting to recruit a youth from Kashmir. [Lady with alleged ISIS link detained in Hyderabad]

Afshan who also goes by the alias Nicky Joseph was deported from the UAE last week to Hyderabad after it was alleged that she was recruiting youth for the ISIS.

During her interrogation, she is alleged to have told the police that she was in touch with some youth including one from Kashmir and was attempting to recruit him.

However, when asked if her husband was aware of her activities, she did not seem convincing, the investigator also said. [ISIS lady recruiter: What was the extent of indoctrination?]

The police are trying to ascertain whether she was in touch with some persons from Kashmir. She repeatedly took the name Bakar during her questioning and on further interrogation, the police found that he was a youth from Kashmir.

The Hyderabad police are trying to ascertain from their counterparts in Kashmir about this person, but so far no information has been forthcoming.

Further, the police are also ascertaining another link to Delhi. She is alleged to have told the police that she used to chat up with one person from Delhi. It is too premature to divulge any details on these links as the investigations are still on, the officer informed.

Dots need to be joined:

Intelligence Bureau officials who had questioned Afshan on her arrival in Hyderabad after being deported said that it is quite a complex case. There are many dots that need to be joined. There is a lot of online material that needs to be looked into.

The extent of her interaction with the youth who are now under investigation is something that needs to be ascertained. The other aspect yet to be ascertained is whether her family members knew about her alleged online activities. Further, it is also to be seen if she was directly in touch with any recruiter who was part of the ISIS.

In most of the recent cases that have been probed, the police have found that most of these persons are into suo motu propaganda. Further, in the recent case in Kerala, it was found that the six youth who were let off after questioning were only browsing ISIS sites out of curiosity.
