Hyderabad, June 12: Travelling has never been easy and safe for women, especially those who move alone, in India. Thanks to miscreants preying on gullible passengers, travelling has often proved to be a daunting task for women.

Things are likely to change as a special team of "Subhadra Vahini" has been launched by the railways at Visakhapatnam railway station in Andhra Pradesh on Monday to assist women passengers in times of need.

The all-women team of "Subhadra Vahini" consists of 20-member security personnel who will attend to the needs of women passengers passing through the Visakhapatnam railway station.

Any woman passenger in need of help can dial the toll free number 182 to seek help from the members of "Subhadra Vahini". The initiative is a joint effort of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Commercial Department Waltair Division.

"#Visakhapatnam Railways launched 'Subhadra Vahini', a special team of women security personnel from Railway Protection Force & commercial Dept, with an aim to assist lady passengers subjected to inconveniences, who can now seek assistance by calling toll free no 182. (11.06.18)," tweeted ANI.

Launching the programme, Divisional Railway Manager MS Mathur said that the initiative has been started to help women passengers, who may be facing trouble as they travel in trains.

Mathur added that the members of the special team were meant for security-related needs of women passengers. The idea of having women providing security to female passengers is to help travellers approach them without any hesitation.

"Harassed women passengers can seek assistance from the special team by calling the toll free no 182. The women security personnel of the RPF and the ticket checking staff will be monitoring the activities of miscreant to better attend to the grievances of the female passengers," an official of the railways told The New Indian Express.

Lauding the effort, Bengaluru-based IT professional Meghna Pai, who often travels in trains alone, said that such teams should be deployed in all railway and bus stations of the country where miscreants roam freely.
