Profile of 51st Jnanpith Award Winner Dr. Raghuveer Chaudhari

Gujarati novelist, poet and critic Dr. Raghuveer Chaudhari was conferred the 51st Jnanpith Award by President Pranab Mukherjee yesterday. Dr. Chaudhari has also written columns for various newspapers such as Sandesh, Janmabhumi, Nirikshaka and Divya Bhaskar.

He retired as a lecturer at Gujarat University in 1998. He has mostly written in Gujarati language though some of his noteworthy creations have been in Hindi language too.

Awards received:

He was given Kumar Chandrak in 1965

He received the Uma-Snehrashmi Prize for 1974-75

He received the Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak in 1975

He was conferred with Sahitya Akademi Award in 1977 for his trilogy novel Uparvas, Sahwas and Antarvas.

He got Sauhard Samman from Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthaan for contribution to Hindi literature in 1990

He got Munshi Award in 1997

He shared Sahitya Gaurav Puraskar in 2001 with renowned Gujarati author Ramanlal Joshi

He won Narmad Suvarna Chandrak in 2010

He was given the Jnanpith Award for the year 2015 which is India's highest literary award by the President of India Pranab Mukherjee

Dr. Raghuveer Chaudhari's early years:

He was born on the 5th of December 1938 in Gujarat to a religious farmer couple. He completed his BA in 1960 and the did MA in Hindi language and literature from Gujarat University.

He completed his PhD for his comparative study of Hindi and Gujarati verbal roots from Gujarat University in the year 1979.

He had actively taken part in the Navnirman Movement in Gujarat and had strongly opposed the imposition of Emergency in 1975.

Career:

Dr. Raghuveer Chaudhari began his career by joining the School of Languages in Gujarat University in 1977 and worked there till 1998 when he retired as a professor and the Head of Department of Hindi in the year 1998.

Post his retirement from the University he served for the executive council of Sahitya Akademi from 1998 to 2002.

In 2001 he was appointed as the President of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad and is presently its serving trustee.

He then became a member of the Press Council of India for two years.

Meanwhile he was also appointed as a jury for the 25th Indian Film Festival.

Post retirement he took to his farming roots too in his ancestral town Bapupura.

In all as an author he has written more than 80 books and has received numerous awards for the same.

He had begun his writing career with novels and poetries but then had later ventured into writing other forms of literature too.

Dr. Raghuveer Chaudhari's famous novels:

Amrita (1965) explores the concept of existentialism

Venu Vatsala was published in 1967

1975 trilogy titled Uparvas, Sahwas and Antarvas

1976 saw two novels of his being published Purvarang and Laagni

Rudramahalaya was published in 1978

Somtirth was published in 1996

Samjyaa Vinaa Chhuta Padavun was out in 2003

Ek Dag Aagal Be Dag Paachhal was published in 2009 and so was Avaran.

Trijo Purush is based on the life of Chandravadan Mehta, a Gujarati author

Sikandar Sani is a historical play

Tamasa published in 1965 explores the idea of intelligence over feelings

Vaheta Vriksha Pavanma is a poetry collection published in 1985

Dr. Raghuveer Chaudhari has two short stories collection to his name, Akasmik Sparsh and Gersamaj

Sahaarani Bhavyata and Tilak Kare Raghuvir are the titles of his collections of sketches
