IT czar, Congress candidate Nandan Nilekani's defeat: What went wrong (in pics)
One of the most highlighted contests of the Lok Sabha Elections of 2014 was the tough contest between the IT czar Nandan Nilekani from Congress and five time sitting MP from BJP, Ananth Kumar, in Bangalore South of Karnataka.
And the outcome is - BJP's Ananth Kumar wins from the Bangalore South constituency for the sixth consecutive term with a huge margin.
This has been a great loss for the popular face Nandan Nilekani.
"I had been to counting centre few minutes ago. I concede defeat and congratulate Ananth Kumar for his performance in this poll," Nilekani, the face of UPA's flagship Aadhar programme, told even before the results were declared.
Asked what went wrong for him, Nilekani said, "I'm happy with the campaign we have run. I'm happy with the way supporters and Congress leaders worked along with me in this campaign. We have done our best and I remain happy with my decision to stand for election."
But what actually went wrong for him?
Beginning of career in politics
Nandan Nilekani joined Indian National Congress in March, 2014 and has contested in 2014 Lok Sabha election from Bangalore South constituency.
Rigourous campaigning for Lok Sabha Elections 2014
Since the time his name was announced for the seat of Bangalore South from Congress, Nilekani actively campaigned with the youth of Bangalore and literally 'walked' with them to know their issues.
Nandan Nilekani's "Ideas for Bengaluru"
BEing an IT czar, Nilekani used the social media platform extremely well. He created 'Ideas for Bengaluru' where he asked the youth to come out and give their ideas for a dream city.
IT czar's defeat in Lok Sabha Elections
Despite most of the things going in his favour and he receiving a lot of support from the youth also, the biggest problem that Nilekani faced was the party with which he was associated.
Congress 'spoilt it' for Nandan Nilekani
Yes! That turned out to be Nandan's biggest enemy when it came to votes. With people wanting to eliminate Congress from the country, Nandan entered politics through the wrong gates!
Lost the connectivity somewhere?
Despite having used the social media platform extensively and having carried out a lot of pada yatras, Nandan somehow lost the connection with the mass.
Being a millionaire from the IT world, lot of people could not connect to him.
Nandan Nilekani - 'Right man in the wrong party'
The biggest mistake that Nilekani committed towards the start of his political career was - "Right man chose wrong party"
Had he chosen BJP, he would have garnered huge votes.
In Congress, he drew a large crowd in his campaigns but it could not be transformed into votes.
Nilekani concluded that he will continue to work more for the city and the Congress party despite the defeat.
