Modi-Nawaz surprise meeting: Will it change India-Pakistan tense atmosphere?

New Delhi, Dec 1: A surprised and unscheduled meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif on the sidelines of climate change summit in Paris has raised the hope of melting of ice between the two neighbours.

This meeting has come in the backdrop of rising tensions over a number of issues between two neighbouring nations. Six agents of Pakistan's security agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) have recently been arrested in various parts of India.

The meeting between the two PMs took place on Monday in a lobby of the Conference Centre when PM Modi found his counterpart sitting alone there. They sat next to each other started exchanging their views. However, details of the 2 minute meeting has not been revealed.

Both of them were not accompanied by any officials at the time of meeting. The brief chat between the two leaders have been termed as "positive development" by the Pakistani media. PM Sharif himself termed the interaction with his Indian counterpart as ‘cordial'.

This is the first meeting between the two leaders after Ufa in Russia, where they held bilateral talks on the sidelines of SCO summit in July. They decided to hold National Security Advisers (NSA) level talks which was called off by the Pakistan over differences on agenda of the talks in August.

PM Sharif also did not divulge the details of talks.

This meeting has coem three days PM Nawaz Sharif said Pakistan was ready for talks with India without preconditions.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has also welcomed the meeting between two premiers.

The Indian side has described the meeting between them as "brief exchange of courtesies", while Pakistan has termed it as a "good" meeting.

It will be good to see if this meeting can reshape the relationship between the two nations.
