Lucknow, June 25: Are you depressed to the hilt and want to end your life? The thought of suicide is not abnormal; life for most people is not a bed of roses. Many depressed and dejected souls who get no help do end up committing suicide.

According to an estimate, about 800,000 people commit suicide worldwide every year, out of which 17 per cent are Indians. It is a huge number and we are yet to find out solutions to reduce suicide.

Manoj Kumar Saini

However, a man in Uttar Pradesh is saving people from killing themselves in his best possible ways, mostly by risking his own life. The Uttar Pradesh man, who sells juice in a roadside stall in Muzaffarnagar district, has risked his life to save seven people from committing suicide in the last one year.

Today, 26-year-old Manoj Kumar Saini has become a local "superhero" of sort for saving so many lives from killing themselves by jumping into the Ganga canal in Muzaffarnagar's Bhopa area. Saini has managed to save seven lives as his juice stall is located close to the Ganga canal, which is also infamously known as the "suicide point".

Impressed by the bravery, swiftness and zeal of Saini to stop suicide, now, the local administration wants to forward his name for the bravery award, reported The Times of India.

"The first time when I saw a man jumping into the canal, I was shocked. For a minute I froze as I couldn't believe my eyes. Then instantly I decided to save his life and jumped into the water without thinking about the consequences. This happened one year ago and since then every time I see someone taking the plunge, I jump into the canal to save him," the braveheart told the English daily.

Surprisingly, Saini has no formal training in swimming, but that has not stopped him from jumping into swirling water and stop people from dying. "I just know that I can't see someone dying in front of me. That is why I do what I do," Saini was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

The grateful family members of those whom he had saved have rewarded him with a few bucks on a couple of occasions. The local administration also wants to honour him with an award, but the best thing is that today everyone in the area knows Saini well and respect him for what he does. Salute to the braveheart!
