Kerala polls 2016: A look at past results (1952-2011)

By Shubham

One hundred and forty Assembly seats in Kerala will go to the polls on May 16. The state of Kerala did not exist before 1957. After Independence in 1947, Travancore and Cochin were merged to form Travancore-Cochin on July 1, 1949. On January 1, 1950, Travancore-Cochin was recognised as a state.

The Government of India's States Reorganisation Act of 1956 set up the new state of Kerala, incorporating the Malabar District, Travancore-Cochin (excluding 4 southern Taluks which were merged with Tamil Nadu) and the taluk of Kasaragod, South Kanara. A new Legislative Assembly was also formed and election to it was held in 1957. [Past results of Tamil Nadu elections: 1952-2011]
