Karnataka: Melukote Vidhansabha Constituency
Melukote is a town in Pandavapura taluk of Mandya district. Melukote is about 51 km from Mysuru and 133 km from Bengaluru. According to mythological account, this place was known as Narayanadri, Vedadri, Yadavadri, Yathishaila and Tirunarayanapura.
Famous Cheluvanarayana Swamy temple is located in Melukote. The temple is a square building of large dimensions but is very plain and only sparsely ornamented with carvings or sculptures. The presiding deity is Cheluva Narayana Swamy, also known as Tirunarayana.
Melukote has been a centre of learning. It has contributed many literary figures, such as Tirumalarya, Chikkupadhyaya, Alasingachar and Pu. Ti. Narasimhachar. Sri Vedavedantha Bodhini Sanskrit College is one of the oldest institutions here. Melkote is also the location of the Melkote Temple Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary was created on 17 June 1974, primarily to house wolves.
KS Puttanniah, an independent candidate is the current MLA and he defeated C.S. Puttaraju of JDS by 9,848 votes.
