ISIS on Monday shocked the world after hackers working for the dreaded terror group seized control of the social media accounts of US military's Central Command (CENTCOM). Acting swiftly the Pentagon temporarily suspended CENTCOM's Twitter and YouTube accounts for 30 minutes and claimed no classified material compromised.

When US became victim of cybervandalism
How CENTCOM's Twitter handle looked like after it was hacked?

  • Hackers posted threat messages for the US military with comments like: "Love you ISIS" and "US soldiers, we are coming. Watch your back!".
  • The military command's logo were replaced with the one featuring a masked fighter and words like "Cyber Caliphate" and "I love you ISIS".
  • Names, phone numbers and personal email addresses of military personnel as well as PowerPoint slides and maps were also posted by the hackers on the handle.

What did the hackers post?

  • In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, the CyberCaliphate continues its CyberJihad.
  • American soldiers, we are coming, watch your back.
  • We broke into your networks and personal devices and know everything about you.
  • You'll see no mercy infidels. ISIS is already here, we are in your PCs, in each military base.
  • Muslim Hackers! Unite for jihad! Let us struggle with America!

What is the White House saying?

  • White House spokesman Josh Earnest said, "This is something we're obviously looking into, and something we take seriously."
  • "There's a pretty significant difference between what is a large data breach and the hacking of a Twitter account," he added.

CENTCOM terms it cybervandalism

  • We are viewing this purely as a case of cybervandalism, said an official statement from US Central Command.
  • US Central Command's Twitter and YouTube sites were compromised for approximately 30 minutes.
  • These sites reside on commercial, non-Defense Department servers and both sites have been temporarily taken offline while we look into the incident further.
  • CENTCOM's operational military networks were not compromised and there was no operational impact to US Central Command.

"We're back", says CENTCOM

  • We're back! CENTCOM temporarily suspended its Twitter account after an act of cybervandalism.

What did FBI say?

  • We are investigating the hacking of the Twitter and YouTube accounts of the US military command that oversees operations in the Middle East.

How are US politicos reacting?

  • Republican Michael McCaul of Texas, chairman of the US House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security, called the incident "severely disturbing."
