India-Pakistan relations: Timeline since PM Modi took office


India and Pakistan have shared a rocky relationship since their independence from British rule in 1947. The two nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours have fought in 1965, 1971 and 1999. Kashmir has been a bone of contention between these two neighbours.

Kargil (1999) is the first armed conflict between the two neighbours since they officially conducted nuclear weapons tests.

Indo-Pak relations timeline in 1 year

Prime Minister Narendra took an initiative to maintain cordial relationship between the two nations by inviting SAARC heads including Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The move signalled his priority to engage with neighbours.

Repeated ceasefire violations by Pakistan in a span of just two months since May 26, 2014 when Narendra Modi took office Pakistan had violated the ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir 19 times.

Below are the important events took place on India-Pakistan relations during first year of Modi government

  • Narendra Modi invited Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for his swearing ceremony
  • Shawal diplomacy: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif sent a white sari for the mother of Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he gifted a shawl to Sharif's mother when he visited India for his swearing in ceremony.
  • Ceasefire violation: Around 800 incidents of ceasefire violations were reported in the first year of Modi government.
  • Secretary level talk called off: India called off secretary level scheduled to be held in Islamabad on August 25, 2014 after Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit met Kashmirir separatist leaders. Foreign Secretaries of the two countries were to meet after a hiatus of two years in the dialogue process, to discuss the way forward in talks.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif met in Kathmandu in November, 2014 at the SAARC Summit where they did not, however, hold any bilateral meeting.
  • Foreign Secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar met with his Pakistani counterpart Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhury in March this year as part of SAARC Yatra this year.
  • War of words escalated between leaders from India and Pakistan after Modi's critical remarks about Pakistan during his Bangladesh visit and in the wake of India's military action in Myanmar.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted his Pakistani counterpart on June 16 on the beginning of Ramzaan.
  • PM Modi and PM Sharif set to meet in Russian city of Ufa on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Ufa.
