In Pics: India celebrates colourful festival of Holi

New Delhi, March 17: The 'festival of colours' Holi was on Monday was celebrated across the India with great fervour. People of all age groups greeted each other by applying gulal and colours and distributing sweets.

The most sought after sweet delicacy on Holi is "Gujiya".

In the national capital Delhi, men and women drenched one another with colour. Young revellers sprayed water guns and flung balloons filled with water at each other and even at strangers.

In Vrindavan, the land of Lord Krishna, temples were enveloped in colourful clouds of gulal. Saffron colour made from fragrant flowers was sprinkled on the devout. The central point of celebrations was the Bankey Bihari temple.

Politicians also used the Holi festival to connect with voters.

In Mathura, the whole stretch from Holi Gate to the Dwarkadheesh temple witnessed Holi fervour. People threw colours and gulal as they greeted one another with the customary three-time Holi hug.

In Agra, foreign tourists watched the Holi revellers with awe and curiosity.

In Bihar, revellers gathered around shops at the Dak Bungalow roundabout in Patna for the customary 'thandai' and 'paan'. Ripe tomatoes were thrown at each other, with colours also being used as there were dances to catchy Holi songs.

In Maharashtra, a riot of colours engulfed Mumbai and other parts as people celebrated Holi with joy and gaiety, braving a sudden warm spell in the atmosphere.

In Odisha, Holi revellers smeared colour powder on each other and offered greetings in Bhubaneswar and other parts of the state.

Militancy-affected Manipur also celebrated the colourful festival of Holi with much pomp and show.

With the Lok Sabha polls only weeks away, even politicians used the Holi festival to connect with voters.
