Sikhs across the world are celebrating the birthday of their first Guru-Guru Nanak- with great pomp and show. Also known as Gurupurab, it is one of the most important and sacred festivals of the Sikh community. It is also known as Guru Nanak's Prakash Utsav.
The festival is celebrated every year on a full moon day in the month of Kartik, according to the Hindu Lunar calender.
The festival is observed over a period of three days in the month of October-November. It begins with 'Akhand Path' prior to the Gurupurab. The festival is marked by colourful parades across the streets, which include the 'Gatka' (Sikh martial art) highlighting the valour and skills of the community.
