Have a look at 9 deadliest floods in Indian history

Ever since independence, India has constantly witnessed some of the worst natural disasters most frequent among them were floods. People, especially in north India lived under the threat of flood devastation, which on an annual basis hits thousands of human lives apart from livestock and assets worth billions.

Here is a list of nine deadliest floods the country has witnessed:

1987 Bihar flood

Kosi, Bihar's sorrow, had wrecked havoc in 1987 and took lives of nearly 1,399 people and 5302 animals. Nearly 29 million people were affected across 30 districts in one of the deadliest floods in country's history. This flood caused an estimated loss of Rs 68 million due to damage of crops and public property.

1998 Assam Floods

The 1998 Assam Floods is considered to be the most severe one since 1950. The Brahmaputra remained above the danger mark for almost three months at 6 major gauge sites on the river. All the 21 districts in the Assam valley were flooded affecting a population of 47 lakhs in 5,300 villages and damaging 9.7 lakhs hectares of agricultural land. Besides, 30,900 houses were washed away or damaged and 156 people were killed. Lives of 7,814 cattles were also lost in the floods.

2004 Bihar Floods

It was one of the worst floods in State's as well as country's history in a decade. Around 885 people and 3,272 animals had lost their lives and nearly 21.2 million human were affected in 20 districts of Bihar.

2005 Maharashtra Floods

Country witnessed yet another deadly flood in the year 2005 in Maharashtra. The 2005 Maharashtra flood was one of the most deadly floods in the region. At least 5,000 people died in this flood. Mumbai was the worst hit by the monsoon and even the maximum city came to a standstill. People were stuck in offices, houses, for several days due this flood caused by incandescent rain.

2008 Bihar Floods

Bihar is most flood-prone state in the country as it has constantly witnessed such natural disasters. Another such disastrous flood the state had experienced was in 2008 when a breach in Kosi embankment at Kushaha in Nepal on August 18, 2008 had triggered floods in India. The river changed its course, killing hundreds of people and displacing around 30 lakh people. The incident also brought wide scale destruction in over 8 lakh acres of farm land.

2010 Ladakh Floods

A major cloudburst and heavy rainfall on the intervening night of August 6, 2010 triggered mudslides, flash floods and debris flow in Jammu and Kashmir's Ladakh. 71 towns and villages in Leh were affected in the region and at least 255 people died.

2012 Assam Floods

Assam once again faced the wrath of Brahmaputra due to significant monsoon rains in 2012. The unprecedented flood claimed human lives of 124 people. Worst hit area was Kaziranga National Park where 13 great India rhinos and around 500 animals died due to flooding.

2013 Uttarakhand Floods

The June 2013 Uttarakhand flood is one of the most disastrous one in the history of India. The multi-day cloudburst in the hill state of Uttarakhand triggered flash floods and massive landslides. Nearly one lakh Hindu pilgrims coming to visit the Kedarnath and Badrinath shrines were trapped in all 9 districts of this northern state. Around 1000 people were confirmed dead in this Himalayan tsunami while more than 5,700 people were "presumed dead." Indian Army had to launch one of its most severe rescue operations in its history to save those trapped in the valley.

2014 Jammu & Kashmir Floods

Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing worst flood situation in nearly six decades due to incessant rain and flash floods. River Jhelum and its tributaries are flowing above danger mark. Nearly, 138 people have been killed so far even as the Indian Army has launched a major rescue operation and evacuated 11,000 people to safety by deploying 100 columns of troops in flood-hit areas of the state. The Vaishno Devi Yatra has also been suspended.
