From shoes to coal: 9 big controversies of Jayalalithaa's life

Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram popularly known as Jayalalithaa, convicted on Friday by a Bangalore special court in a disproportionate assets case, had fought more than a dozen cases and was acquitted in most of them. She had fought many legal battles in her career and also courted many controversies. Here are a few controversies of Jayalalithaa's life:

1996 - The colour TV case

Jayalalithaa was charged in a corruption case involving the purchase of television sets for villagers.

The television sets were provided to villagers under a government community education and entertainment plan.

Officials said that the televisions were bought at inflated prices and claimed that claimed that some of the money paid to television set makers was being returned to state officials as kickbacks.

1996 - When she was arrested in 1996, press reports said that among the treasures found at her residence were 64 pounds of diamond-studded gold jewelry, thousands of saris, 750 pairs of shoes, 91 designer watches and 19 automobiles.

1998 - Tansi land deal case and Jayalalithaa

The case relates to the purchase of land belonging to the state-owned small industries corporation, Tansi, at Guindy by Jaya Publications, in which Jayalalithaa and her friend Sasikala were partners.

Delivering the judgment, Justice P Anbhazhagan said facts presented in the chargesheet and during arguments showed that the sale deed of the prime land at Guindy had been executed on May 29, 1992 with the dishonest intention of cheating the government.

The Chennai police have registered a case of attempt to murder against former Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalitha, her close associate Sasikala Natarajan and Sasikala's nephew V. Mahadevan.

The police action follows a complaint lodged by Jayalalitha's ex-auditor R. Rajasekaran, 53, which claimed that he was summoned to Jayalalitha's Poes Garden bungalow and was brutally assaulted with high-heeled shoes and a stick by the AIADMK supremo, Sasikala and Mahadevan.

Rajasekaran also alleged that he was made to sign two letters and a promissory note for Rs 50 lakh by Jayalalitha and Sasikala. However, Jayalalitha, in a statement, dismissed the charges.

Marriage of her foster son - She also attracted international attention for the lavish wedding she organized for her foster son, alleged to have cost many millions of dollars.

2000 - Construction of the seven-storey 'Pleasant Stay' hotel in Kodaikanal, flouting norms - The prosecution's case was that Jayalalitha, Selvaganapathy and Pandey had granted permission to the hotel to construct a seven-storeyed structure at Blue Ville in the tourist resort town of Kodaikanal in violation of building rules.

In the Pleasant stay hotel case, she was acquitted by the Madras high court on December 4, 2001.

The case was linked to alleged clearance by Jayalalithaa for the construction of a hotel in ecologically important Kodaikanal by flouting government rules.

1999 - Rs 7 billion coal import scam case

The case, relating to import of coal by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board during Jayalalitha's tenure as chief minister, was filed on a complaint by Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy alleging irregularities to the extent of Rs 7 billion in the deal.

The chargesheet in the case was filed on April 2, 1997.

In the case, All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary and former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalitha was the prime accused.

On September 21, 2001, Jayalalithaa had to step down as chief minister following a Supreme Court verdict which struck down her appointment by the then governor M Fathima Beevi as she then faced conviction in the TANSI land deal case.

The conviction attracted provisions of the Representation of the People Act which disqualified her from contesting elections.

On September 27, 2014 - Jayalalithaa, is an Indian politician who is a former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu who resigned on Friday, Sept 27 after she was convicted for misusing her office during her tenure of 1991-96 to amass properties worth INR66.65 crores. The assets under the purview of the case are the farm houses and bungalows in Chennai, agricultural land in Tamil Nadu, a farm house in Hyderabad, a tea estate in the Nilgiris, valuable jewelry, industrial sheds, cash deposits and investments in banks and investments and a set of luxury cars.
