From condoms to denims, rape gets a new meaning in India every day, thanks to leaders

Since the Nirbhaya case in 2012, rape has seen many definitions and they are constantly evolving, thanks to the political leaders who make it easier for the common man to 'understand' why and how it happens. You may call it the scheme of a convoluted mind, but that is how Indians define rape.

Recently, CPI leader Atul Anjan pointed out that the condom ad by porn star Sunny Leone is "sexually exciting" and increasing rape incidences in the country.

Rape

Anjan was unforgiving while describing one of her porn clips. "Imagine her lying on her back, hair dishevelled and men coming in day and night," he said. Whether that is denouncing pornography or stimulating the imagination of the people.

Anjan is not alone, many leaders like him have cited similar reasons behind rape.

Mulayam Singh Yadav: On August 21, 2015, Yadav said that gangrape was impossible. There is one committing the crime and all four are named.

Yadav had said,"Often if one person commits rape, four people are named in the complaint. Four people are named for rape, can it be possible? It is not practical. They probably say one was watching...another was there... If there are four brothers, then all four are named."

Police in Uttar Pradesh: The protector turns a moral police. Instead of checking their own efficiency, the police of Nasirpur in Firozabad and Etawah district said that rapes happen due to mobile phones, short and revealing dresses and lack of entertainment.

Astrologer Sachchidananda Babu: He had reportedly said on national television that rape can be predicted and that zodiac signs of a woman can tell where and when she will be raped. Aries women are likely to be raped in a bathroom, while Capricorns will be assaulted by their parents or friends.

Binay Bihari, Minister of Art, Culture and Youth affairs: He said that mobile phones and non-vegetarian food are the main reasons behind rape as youngsters use mobile phone to watch blue films and listen to vulger music. Non-vegetarian food on the other hand heats up the body.

Sudin Dhavalikar, member of BJP ally Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party in Goa: Dhavalikar had urged women not to wear bikinis for their "own safety". Claiming that he was not against wearing bikini, he said,"Pub culture is not Indian culture and we don't want Western culture. Young people go drinking and it often leads to law and order problems. Our sisters and daughters are getting spoilt. Goa was a city of temples and churches. We don't want pub-tourism."

Babulal Gaur, BJP from Madhya Pradesh: Insisting that women should do the hard work in maintaining sanity in the society by not kissing or getting involved in any obscene activity. "This is a social crime which depends on men and women. Sometimes it's right, sometimes it's wrong... Until there's a complaint, nothing can happen," he said.

Ram Gopal Yadav: Commenting on the kidnapping, rape and murder of the two teenage sisters in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi party leader said,"vulgarity, obscenity and violence shown on TV channels. In many places, when the relationship between girls and boys come out in open, it is termed as rape."

Asaram Bapu: That very same God who failed to help him avoid jail seems to be the last resort to protect women from rape. "I consider you as my brother', and should have said to the other two ‘Brother I am helpless, you are my brother, my religious brother."

He also added,"In other words, if she's begged for forgiveness and cited the fraternity of man and called to God for help, all would have been well." Bapu's spokesperson later responded to criticism of his statements by saying that women who get raped bear some responsibility in the act.

Jitender Chattar (Khap Panchayat): He put the entire blame on chowmein and said that it is the sole reason why women are being raped. Chowmein, it seems, increases the body heat, leading to rape.

That is not all, there are others too who form the bandwagon. MP Rajpal Saini, Mohan Bhagwat, Chhattisgarh Home Minister Nanki, Abu Asim Azmi, state president of the Maharashtra Samajwadi Party, Rajasthan BJP lawmaker Banwari Lal Singhal and many more have set real examples of failed leaders who make up for a failed society.
