The incident happened on Sunday (July 29) when thousands of DMK workers assembled outside the city's Kauvery Hospital where party patriarch and former chief minister of the state M Karunanidhi is undergoing treatment. The supporters assembled hearing the 94-year-old Kalaignar's deteriorating health conditions and stayed there for a long time despite appeals from the party leaders and the lawkeepers.

It was one such group of DMK supporters went to the eatery, located 10 kilometres from the hospital at Virugambakkam where they sought food. But when the restaurant staff members refused to serve them food, saying the kitchen was shut, they were attacked by the party workers.

The accused was identified as Yuvaraj and a case has been registered against him and some of his accomplices, police sources said, agencies reported.

The DMK leadership also took a strong step by suspending Yuvaraj besides another person Divakar. Party president MK Stalin, son of Karunanidhi, said the actions of the suspended workers were "strongly condemnable" and warned against indulging in such acts.
