Chennai, Nov 22: Norway's Magnus Carlsen became the youngest world chess champion in beating defending champion Vishwanathan Anand here.

Five-time-title-holder Anand lost his title after drawing the 10th game with his young opponent, giving the latter an unassailable lead. Carlsen, who will turn 23 on November 30, sealed the championship battle with two games remaining. The scores at the end of the 10th game in the 12-match championship stood at 6.5-3.5 in favour of the Norwegian. He won three games while seven games were drawn.

It was a dubious first for Anand who failed to win a single game

Anand, 43, congratulated his opponent after the deciding game and acknowledged that he could not execute his strategy on the desired lines. He also conceded that the loss in the fifth game was a setback for him.

Anand had won the prestigious title in 2000, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012 but ironically lost his crown in his hometown. It was also a dubious first for the Indian Grandmaster who failed to win a single game in a world championship match.
