Tipu Trouble: Cases pile up against Karnad as cops seeks legal advise

Bengaluru, Nov 12: Girish Karnad who is in the news for suggesting that the Bengaluru airport be named after Tipu Sultan has a host of complaints greeting him.

While one was filed in Bengaluru another has been filed now in Mandya. However, in none of the complaints has the police proceeded and is seeking advise from the legal department of Karnataka on how to go about these cases.

Cases pile up against Girish Karnad

The Bengaluru complaint filed before the Vidhan Soudha police accused Karnad of issuing controversial statements leading to the flare up of communal tension in the state.

However, the police have sent the matter to the legal department for an opinion. When asked why this was done, an officer informed that since it was a personal opinion by the writer, they want advise from the government on how to proceed further in the case.

Meanwhile in Mandya a complaint has been filed against Karnad, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and three others for inciting communal tension with their remarks on Tipu Sultan.

The complainant Praveen Shetty, a Kannad activist says that these persons have hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas. The complainant also notes that Karnad had stated that the Kempe Gowda International Airport at Bengaluru be named after Tipu Sultan and this has hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas.

One more dies

Meanwhile one person who was injured in the lathi charge in Madikeri, Kodagu succumbed to injuries. Javed who was part of the Tipu Jayanthi celebrations at Madikeri on November 10th was seriously injured when the police resorted to lathi charge.

In the incident a VHP worker, Kuttappa aged 50 years old too had died. The police claimed that he had fallen off a wall during the lathi charge. Kodagu district observed a bandh following the incident.

Today life has been limping back to normalcy in Kodagu even as demands seeking a judicial probe get louder. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that there shall be no judicial probe or a CBI inquiry. He has sought a report from the Mysore commissioner on the incident, he says.
