PU college girl death: BMTC driver arrested

Bengaluru, Oct 20: A first year student of Mount Carmel College was mowed down by the BMTC bus on Monday, Oct 20 near Kempegowda bus stand (KBC).

18-year-old Poornima was the elder daughter of Sundar Murthy, who is a flower vendor. He dropped her near Sangam theater at 7:45 am, unaware of the fact that it would be the last day of his daughter's life.

Reenukeshwar, the Chief Traffic Manager of BMTC told OneIndia "KSRTC bus and BMTC bus were taking right turn and both buses were in race to enter the bus stand. In the meanwhile, Poornima also rushed to cross the road at the same time from other side but she was hit by the rear end of the bus, and she collapsed and received massive injuries, as her head was crushed under the wheel of the bus."

He also added that the driver, Lokesh has been arrested and the FIR has been registered against him, as he is responsible for the fatal accident .

The accused driver was taken to Upparpet police station and the bus with the registration number KA 8714 was confiscated.

BMTC conducts awareness drive

A day after the fatal mishap, all staff members of BMTC as well as traffic officials came together on Tuesday, Oct 20, to aware people (commuters) to use the skywalk facilities at Majestic bus station.

Reenukeshwar also said, "10 to 15 staff members from BMTC have been deployed to educate drivers as well as people to minimise the chaos at bus stops." [Bengaluru: College girl mowed down by BMTC bus]

Meanwhile, Poornima's bereaved family donated her eyes, as her eyes can light one's life. She was said to be a bright student in her college as well as the most intelligent among her two younger siblings.
