Working on modalities of farm loan waiver, will announce it shortly: Kumaraswamy

Days after taking oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Kumaraswamy met representatives of farmers groups in Bengaluru and discussed the problems faced by them.

Under attack from the BJP over the alleged delay in fulfilling his pre-poll assurance to the farming community, Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Friday reiterated his commitment towards farm loan waiver and said that there should no confusion over the issue.

Taking to Twitter, the Chief Minister said the government is looking to develop a scientifically-procured process so that farmers can reap the maximum benefit from the loan waiver.

"Dear farmers, Let there be no confusion on farm loan waiver. I am fully committed to the loan waiver. I want to ensure it is done scientifically benefitting maximum farmers. I am working on the modalities and will announce it shortly," he tweeted.

His reaction comes a day after BJP karnataka tweeted saying that the chief minister has failed to fulfilled promise of loan waiver even after fifteen days.

"It's been more than 15 days since Sri. Kumaraswamy promised about loan waiver in a meeting with farmers. He even fought elections stating he would waive off farmers loan the minute he comes to power & he still hasn't," BJP tweeted.

"He has time and again proved he is an untrustworthy politician," he added.

Days after taking oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Kumaraswamy met representatives of farmers groups in Bengaluru and had promised to waif off loans within 15 days.

He had recently said he would retire from politics if he failed to honour the promise, and asked farmers not to "fall prey to the BJP conspiracy".

Also, in the run up to the Assembly polls, The JD(S) leader had promised to write off agricultural loans totalling a whopping Rs 53,000 crore within 24 hours of coming to power.

The BJP has been targeting him over the "delay" in keeping that promise, and had called a statewide bandh which evoked a lukewarm response.
